Is Bottled Drinking Water Really Healthy?
It is a strange thing how popular bottled drinking water has gotten, especially among the health-conscious, trendoid yuppie crowd. There is just no good reason for it. It is not like there has been some kind of campaign to convince people that drinking bottled water is healthier and better for you. Although there are some types of bottled drinking water that actually try to sell their product as a health aid by, say, putting some vitamins in it that you could get in a pill anyway or, sillier yet, putting oxygen bubbles in it, most bottled water is nothing more than simple spring, or even lake water put in a plastic bottle and sold at exorbitant rates. The fact is that bottled drinking water is actually, if anything, less healthy than municipal water. Of course, it depends on what municipality that you live in, but it is often thought that bottled drinking water is more likely to contain contaminants and subject to a lower standard of purity than is kept in many cities. Besides this, many scientists have said that plastic bottles which hold bottled drinking water can leach out into the liquid, and that this plastic is also toxic for people who consume it. Altogether, there is no reason for you to ever drink bottled water, if you are to believe the experts.
I think, though, that they have a good job marketing the ideas of “nature” and “purity”, even if they have not directly come out and said that it is healthier than normal stuff. The idea of bottled drinking water, especially bottled spring water, is that you are drinking not just water, but special water from far away containing the essence of mountains, or of hidden underground springs. Although this idea is pretty stupid, since bottled drinking water tends to come from huge industrial factories, and is not gathered by mountain girls in buckets in the bright cold morning and sent straight to your door. While bottled drinking water may come from springs, that is no reason to believe that it is better than other water. Spring water is subject to contamination, and having it sit in those bottle for months at a time can not be too good for its purity, if you ask me. I would rather drink straight out of the tap, save money, save plastic that would otherwise be made and thrown away, and probably drink cleaner water.
