Why five set matches only for mens singles in grand slam tennis tournaments?

It’s because of what happened in Rome 2006. Federer and Nadal played ina breath-taking 5 hour, 5 set final on red clay. Nadal won in a 5th set tie breaker. Great match, but both players were so exhausted after ward, that they withdrew from the following tournament in Hamburg.

Since then the ATP has only 2 out of 3 set finals in Masters, with the exception of the Miami final and the Masters cup final.
