can one rep maximum bench presses be done inside a power rack without spotters?

Does the power rack serve this kind of purpose? Or is it better to do this with a smith machine?

The smith machine will not be an accurate measure of your 1RM, as the weight lifted will be less than the weights of the bar and plates. It is also highly suggested that you do not attempt a 1RM without someone that can properly spot you. What I do suggest, if you cannot get a spotter, is that you just estimate your 1RM by doing more reps and using the following equation:

1-RM = weight lifted (in pounds) / [1.0278 - (# of reps X 0.0278)]

Note: the “# of reps is the amount you can do until fatigue, but it cannot exceed 10 repetitions (you must choose a weight that you cannot do more than 10 of).
